i'm pat lieuson muse. >> and i'm jim handly. >> first this afternoon, what killed the 6-day-old panda cub last month. >> the zoo tells us lung and liver problems contributed to the little bear's death. megan mcgrath has more on the zoo's findings and how the mother, me xapi xiang is doing. >> reporter: they've been running a lot of tests, trying to figure out exactly what happened. and they do believe they now have the cause of death for the cub. they say that the cub's lungs were poorly developed, that there was not enough oxygen getting to the liver. that, in turn, caused liver damage and ultimately death. as for mei xiang, she is back on public display. she was out in the yard this morning, although she kept her back to visitors most of the morning. she's almost back to normal, she's not cradling her toy anymore. but she's no longer using that

bamboo nest. they removed the last of that nesting material. in terms of her appetite, she still is not eating as much as normal. she's only eating about 80% to 85% of what she would normally eat. she is down a little bit in her weight. >> we want to see mei get to 100% consumption of bamboo, fruits and vegetables and biscuits as she normally would at this time of year. remember, she wasn't eating when she was in the den. so she is down in weight about 20 pounds from her normal 240. she's about 220 this week. and so that's a little bit off. but it's not a lot off. >> reporter: as for the future of mei xiang and tian tian, will they be setting up more breeding. they'll consult with their colleagues back in china. from the national zoo, megan mcgrath, news4.

four children and their grandmother were killed in a row house fire in baltimore early this morning. the fire department said it looked like an inferno when firefighters arrived. they said it's surprising anyone made it out alive. but five other family members did manage to escape. one of them jumped out of a second-story window, another handed her baby to someone outside before she could get out. but inside, four children, ages ranging from 1 to 7, couldn't escape. here's what one neighbor saw. >> it was smoke, fire, you could see the fire coming out the windows. and the fire department, they just, you know, trng to get it out the best they could. but it was just rolling. >> reporter: it started about 2:00 this morning and wasn't put out until 3:45. two firefighters were injured when one of them fell through the second floor into the basement. they're both expected to be okay. some denver residents are holding their breath today. police have discovered a body in the same suburb where a 10-year-old girl disappeared on

friday. but authorities say it's way too early to know if it's the body of the missing girl. the remains were found last night in a grassy park about seven miles from where jessica ridgeway disappeared, while walking to school. at a news conference this morning, police said they plan to continue searching for jessica. they believe she was abducted and today her parents were ruled out as suspects. the only real clue police have is her backpack found over the weekend six miles from her home, and a water bottle that she had with her. the focus in the race for the white house today turns to the running mates. it is debate night, and vice presidential candidates joe biden and paul ryan will face off this evening in kentucky. unlike a lot of vp debates, this one might make a big difference, because this race is so close now. >> reporter: in danville, the college town that hosts tonight's debate, local voters say they'll tune in. >> i want ryan to be able to

express what we want for our country, like romney did in the presidential debate. >> i think it will help obama if joe biden does well. >> reporter: with the debate hall ready at center college, paul ryan arrived, a 42-year-old republican whiz kid set to face a 69-year-old debate veteran. >> joe biden has been on this stage before. it's my first time. but what he can't run from is president obama's indefensible record. >> reporter: the vice president is sometimes hurting team obama with gaffes, that he won't dodge. >> looking forward to it. >> reporter: the stakes in danville look higher after last year's debate in denver. >> the reason is mitt romney's developed significant momentum from his debate performance from barack obama last week. >> reporter: romney, who last night held a big rally in sidney, ohio, narrowed the gap in that key state. in the new nbc poll, no change

in florida, obama by one. romney up three since the debate. romney up two in ohio, trailing by six. >> you're talking about single digits, having picked sides as a result of the debate, and romney got the advantage there. so we see a slight closing in these tossup numbers in these three critical states. >> reporter: more pressure on the number two candidates, who face off tonight. for their debate here at center college, domestic and foreign policy, biden and ryan will be seated, which normally leads to a lower energy level. from danville, kentucky, steve handelsman. >> they also came out with a poll on the senate race, showing tightening there, too, huh? >> reporter: that's right. tim kaine at 47% now, just one

point above george allen at 46%. just go back a week ago, which, again, was before the presidential debates, jim, and kaine was 49 over allen's 44. a five-point spread became a one-point spad. even in the case of these two guys, both super-well-known governors, that things that happen to the top of the ticket can ripple down to senate races. and so as the race between romney and obama narrows in virginia, so does that senate race. back to you. >> big night out there. steve handelsman, thanks so much. baker is campaigning for question 7 in maryland. it would expand gambling in the state. and baker has a message for people who think it's a bad bill. during a taping of viewpoint this morning, baker said the initiative would create 12,000 jobs in the state and 6,000 jobs in the county and raise much-needed revenue. baker is also behind the push to

build a new casino at national harbor. he responded to critics' concerns. >> what do you say to your constituents who have a moral dilemma with this, in terms of addiction, concerns about crime and things of that nature? >> what i say to folks is, because maryland's already passed a gaming bill, we are currently -- it's legal to gamble in maryland. there are five sites they do it. and right now, people from prince george's county are going to other sites. the problem is, those issues that are very real come back to prince george's county without the revenues to deal with it. what we want to makeure is we can bring in enough revenue that we can target job creation, we can target health benefits, we can deal with some of the very real problems that are out there. right now we have the problems, but no resources to deal with them. >> opponents were also concerned that revenue generated from

expanded gambling will not be spent on education or other essential services as claimed. baker disputes that. you can watch the entire viewpoint interview on sunday morning at 7:00 right here on nbc 4. the meningitis outbreak continues to spread today. according to the centers for disease control and prevention, virginia now has 30 confirmed cases of infection. and nine cases reported so far in maryland. 170 people in all have been sickened in the outbreak that now spans 11 states. 14 people total have died, including one person in virginia, one in maryland. the massachusetts pharmacy linked to the tainted steroid shots has recalled all of its products now. well, some cold weather is rolling in, folks. heads up, and bundle up. some parts of our region could be under a freeze watch for tomorrow night. >> doug kammerer is outside on the storm team 4 weather deck. and if we're going to need

this, in the middle or late fall. we're still looking at early fall. you look at this, and say, 62, that's a bit on the cool side. but not bad at all with a lot of sunshine and light wind. tomorrow, temperatures about the same. we'll see them a little bit higher tomorrow. but the winds will be higher, too. that will actually make things feel a little cooler. as we look across the rest of the region, 58 degrees in martinsburg, 59 in gaithersburg, 63 in la plata, and 64 down towards fredericksburg. rainwise, don't expect any rain. i don't expect any rain until at least monday. we're going to see very dry conditions. those dry conditions will allow for temperatures to start to fall. we'll get quite chilly tonight. but tomorrow night, very chilly. some areas at or below freezing. washington, not included in that freeze watch. but montgomery county, howard county, loudoun county, and everybody to the north and west. i think some areas may not just get around 32, we could see some 20s in parts of the area.

maybe 28, 29. we're talking some very cold air that's starting to race on in here. that is a little bit early for the season. but once again, we're not going to stay cold for quite so long. i do expect a warm-up by the end of the week. once again, a freeze watch tomorrow night for the areas you see here highlighted in the blue. satellite and radar showing -- nothing. clear skies, just a beautiful day out there on this thursday. it will continue to be quite nice right through the evening. but we'll cool off quite quickly. plenty of sunshine. this area of high pressure sags down to the south and east. here comes yet another cold front. that's what's going to help to create the cooler weather, or colder weather tomorrow night. another area of high pressure moves in. saturday morning we'll start off very, very cold. but i do think we'll warm up a little bit, once again, with plenty of sunshine, highs in the low 60s during the day on saturday. this evening, clear skies. 51 to about 56 degrees. tomorrow morning, waking up to another cool start, we'll see most areas in the 30s once

again. 37 in some of the coldest areas, to about 46 inside the city. a chilly start with a few clouds here and there. tomorrow afternoon, sun and clouds, cool and breezy. we'll see high temperatures 59 to 65. but they will be falling quickly tomorrow night. once again, i think even in the d.c. area we could see some 30s to around 40 degrees on saturday morning. going up to a high of 62. 73 on sunday. 74 on monday. just a 30% chance of showers. then we get mild once again. this little cooldown we're seeing is not going to last too long. just gives us a little taste of what's coming. >> thank you. >> it is early. >> real early for 30s. coming up, not your average classroom. how a fairfax county school is expanding school to the mall. and the

>> reporter: students decided on their own to come here, along with their parents and counselors. no mandates. there's a minimum weekly course load, but students move at their own speed. >> you can come in whenever you want. you can leave whenever you want. you can take breaks. there's no constant teacher unless you need help. and you finish on your own time. >> this is what the student is having a problem with, this is what the student is having problems with, and adapt a lesson just to their specific needs. >> i've had problems with, like, trying to get my work done. and they just get you right back on task. they're keeping their eye on you. you can't just come here and not do your work. >> reporter: a comforting thought for stephanie's mom, who also earned a degree online. >> we came over and talked to the staff here. learned about the curriculum. and what it was like to be a satellite student. and so it was something that stephanie said she definitely wanted to try. >> reporter: alexandria school leaders hope to expand the

welcome back to news4 at 4:00. i'm pat lawson muse. >> i'm jim handly. breaking news out of olney, maryland. chopper 4 over a townhouse fire in the 4500 block of cain's lake. fire officials tell us there may be a floor collapse so they are battling this blaze from the outside because it is so intense. again, these live pictures from olney, maryland. let's take a look at our weather, which is about to change. chief meteorologist doug kammerer has the latest. >> yeah, we're at 70 degrees yesterday, so far today we're at 62. that's with plenty of sunshine. and the numbers are going to continue to go down. especially tomorrow night. 62 here in washington. 57 in hagerstown and 54 up towards pittsburgh. that's the cooler air that

continues to settle on in. temperatures from new york down to richmond are between 5 and 10 degrees below average. even a little bit more in some locations. so we're in for quite a chill. not just tonight, but really tomorrow night. once again, some locations under a freeze watch. we'll talk more about that coming up in my forecast in just a little bit and i'll give you the rest of the seven-day forecast as well. it was a bold and elaborate scheme. police are on the lookout for a woman who swiped an expensive wedding dress from a store in northern new jersey. >> she even had a group of friends and a child in on the act. however, as ida siegel reports, what the suspect didn't know is that the whole thing was caught on video. >> reporter: pass her on the sidewalk and she looks like a regular bride casually walking down the street with her new wedding gown. but police say the woman in this video is a criminal. and the dress she's holding was stolen. >> grabbed the gown, opened the door and made a right-hand turn. >> reporter: that's the owner of the shop in fanwood, describing how the dress was swiped from

his store over a week ago. he says the woman came into the store with a large group of friends, who were all in on it. >> we put them in the fitting room to try them on. they had the teenager coming. they were distracting. >> reporter: she even had her kid involved. >> the kid asked for my wife to go buy pizza. and go buy drinks. and we say, this is a boutique store, this is not a restaurant. >> reporter: half the group was back there? >> yes, six of them. and blocked my we to come -- >> reporter: block your wife's view. and one comes here. >> yeah. grab it, and opened the door and go out. >> reporter: with the dress. >> yes. and the kid. the kid running behind. >> reporter: pretty slick. >> it is. >> reporter: a camera around the back of the shore shows her again walking away, paying no mind to the little girl who's following far behind in the parking lot. that, police say, may be the most upsetting part. >> i guess she was more worried about stealing the dress than

her own child, or whose ever child it was. >> the store owner said the dress is worth about $5,000. police are hoping somebody comes forward to identify the woman. it was coach against coach at a youth football game. take a look at this video. a california parent posted online of a coach charging and then tackling a rival coach. right in front of their 13-year-old players. things got out of control, as you see people try to step in, causing even more fights. no word on why one coach went after the other. >> not very good sports. a missouri mother is furious after witnesses claim they saw school officials restrain her son with duct tape. the little boy is 5. and he has special needs. a police report claims the boy was tied up by the principal, and the school bus driver two weeks ago after he got upset on the bus. a parent of one of his school mates is disturbed by the allegations. >> i think there ought to be criminal charges involved. not only on the school bus

we have an update on the scary moment that happened on live tv over the weekend. qvc host cassie slain was giving her sales pitch when she started to get dizzy, she patted her chest and then appeared to faint. the camera cut from the scene and the other host, the host of the show, in fact, dan hughes picked up and continued the sales pitch. since then hughes has been taking flack on social media for the way he reacted. slain was on the "today" show. >> i was being taken care of by two medics, three producers. i told him just please keep going. keep going. i'm fine.

at that. just gorgeous, plenty of sunshine. bright blue skies. a lot of green out there. but we're starting to see some color. a lot of color up towards the mountains. going to be a great weekend to get up there to the mountains to take a look at some of the fall color that is happening towards some of the ski resorts, especially some of the higher elevations. 62 right now. winds out of the south at 7 miles per hour. that wind will be shifting just a little bit over the next day or so and driving in even cooler air. right now 60 in reston. down towards huntingtown we'll see a cool night tonight. we're looking at clear skies, that gives us plenty of sunshine, but it also keeps things much cooler at night. it allows any of the radiation from the surface move right back up into the atmosphere. maybe around 44 in la plata. that's going to be chilly. but knock off five to ten degrees for tomorrow night, and we're talking about the

potential first freeze for many of us out there. i don't it will involve the district. 63 in leesburg. 66 in fredericksburg. then the temperatures come down on saturday. a high of 62. after a low of 39. 73 on your sunday. 74 on monday. with a chance of a shower, not looking too bad next week, though. walmart is going after amazon. it's the largest retailer in the world versus the online pioneer. walmart's game plan lure amazon shoppers with promises of same-day delivery. >> reporter: that's the sound of the way we often shop these days, online, and from the comfort of our home. internet purchases rate $200 billion last year. walmart, the nation's largest retailer, wants to feed the need

chopper 4 over the scene of a fire. the roof has collapsed. i'm jackie bensen. university of maryland students robbed at gun point in this wooded area. i'll have that story. tonight at 6:00, a boy dragged off by police from school. the video and the story sparked international outrage.

an 18th century spannish gallion discovered off the coast of sicily. the finance police began investigating the area after an off-duty border patrol diver discovered large objects on the seabed. the objects turned out to be a cannon and pieces of the cannon's wooden cart. the italian authorities say the gallion is remarkably well preserved, and that it sank back in 1718 during a naval battle between spain and england. a major find for paleontologists in arizona. they say they found the remains of a 200 million year old reptile while doing field work. the most complete skeletons they've ever discovered using 3-d scans. they're reconstructing what the reptile might have looked like. they've already got sketches of the animal. they hope to put the entire skeleton back together and display it for visitors. if you're already the best, challenge yourself to get better.

that's what a caricature artist in the czech republic did. he's already the fastest caricature artist in the world. so he decided to set a new record, this time underwater. he drew ten sketches in just over four minutes all while scuba diving for the first time and looking at his subjects through a window. >> that's cool stuff. >> that's a cool trick to be able to pull off. >> i'll say. still to come on news4 at 4:00 this afternoon, a

an alleged prostitution scandal is drawing a lot of attention to a small town in maine. a fitness instructor there is accused of running a brothel out of her studio and secretly taping encounters with up to 100 men. >> reporter: it's a picture-perfect postcard town. it's what the locals around here do not know that's the talk of the town. a list of more than 100 men, some said to be prominent members of the community, in a little black book of johns who prosecutors argue were paying to have sex with a local zumba dance teacher. >> people are chattering, they just want names.

>> reporter: in court on tuesday, alexis wright pleaded not guilty to 106 counts of prostitution, tax evasion, theft, and privacy violations. >> not guilty. >> fact of the matter is, rumors around town are not evidence of criminal activity. moaning and groaning and consent actual activity between adults is not criminal. >> reporter: according to the affidavit, police began investigating after locals said they saw men going in and out at all hours. often only for a half an hour. court papers say there are also hours of secret video recordings of the sexual encounters. along with text messages and computer records allegedly including video of multiple sexual activities between wright and her business partner, mark strong, who himself is facing 59 counts of promoting prostitution

and privacy violations. >> they were inside the studio and she was naked. but that is not a crime under maine law nor is it prostitution. it may not be good judgment, but it's not actionable by the state. >> reporter: prosecutors believe wright and strong made $150,000 since 2010 in the scheme. now the town is bracing for the fallout. >> wright is charged with theft because she didn't claim all of her income on tax returns, and because she collected public assistance. the alleged johns in this case could be identified later this week. next at 5:00, students robbed at the university of maryland. we have breaking news right now out of montgomery county. a child fell from a window at a high-rise apartment building and grabbed onto a tree.

>> shomari stone just arrived at the apartment building. >> reporter: they said this is amazing that this child is lucky to be alive. we're right here where it happened, rather than a block away. we said, let's bring our viewers closer to the scene. that child fell right in this area right here. my photographer, dave carter, could pan up for our viewers and you can see, folks, that is the eighth floor right there. take a look at the -- you can see the screen, it's damaged. also, the blinds are up. montgomery county police tell me that that child climbed out of that window and fell. dave, if you can come back down here we can show the viewers here. the police said i could come closer to the scene and show you this. this is the branch that that child hit. you can see it snapped. and a lot of witnesses tell me that it's fortunate this tree was here because it broke the fall. let's roll some video right now. witnesses say that this happened around 4:00-ish. that child fell down. a lot of folks say that they were just amazed, that they heard him, he was crying.
